ICHDE HomeOwnership Center Celebrates 20 Years

On the evening of November 6, 2025, the parking lot at 613 N Washington Street transformed into something very special. String lights illuminated a spacious tent where cars typically park, and a blue carpet guided guests from the sidewalk through our transformed outdoor space. For one special night, this became the backdrop for a moving and warm ceremony where more than 90 community members, partners, and supporters gathered to celebrate the HomeOwnership Center’s 20th anniversary.

An Evening of Community and Gratitude

The transformation of our parking lot into an elegant party space was made possible through the incredibly generosity of our community partners. Anderson Party Rentals provided the tents, Breakthru Beverage Delaware donated wine, and Standard Distributing Company supplied beer and hard tea. The Clock Tower Schools and Physics Services handled the AV equipment and event logistics. Every detail, from the string lights overhead to the step-and-repeat banner at the carpet’s end, created an atmosphere not just of celebration but of appreciation.

We were deeply honored by the support of our sponsors, whose contributions made this evening possible, including ICHDE board member and Vice Chair K. Emmanuel Magruder, who provided professional photography services:

Recognition from Leaders

The evening included notable recognitions that reminded us of the impact of our work. Congresswoman Sarah McBride presented a congressional tribute honoring our 20 years of service to Delaware families. Senator Elizabeth Lockman delivered a tribute from the State of Delaware—a recognition that will become part of the state’s historical record. These acknowledgments reflect how homeownership counseling extends beyond individual families to strengthen entire neighborhoods and communities.

The Heart of Our Mission: Client Stories

Throughout the evening, former clients wearing gold lanyards reading “Ask Me About ICHDE” mingled with guests, ready to share their homeownership experiences. Their willingness to attend and engage with others demonstrated the enduring connections formed through our programs.

The evening’s most impactful moments came when two former clients addressed the gathering. One described her path to first-time homeownership; another shared how ICHDE helped her navigate mortgage default and retain her home. Both speakers used words that touched everyone: support, honesty, friendship, partnership, and trust. They described relationships that were more than a counseling service to become life-changing connections.

These individuals shared how our counselors walked alongside them through some of life’s most challenging and rewarding moments and their testimonials reminded everyone present why this work matters so deeply.

Looking Forward

As the evening drew to a close, we were filled with gratitude: Gratitude for our counselors who pour their hearts into this work; Gratitude for partners and sponsors who believe in our mission; And most of all, gratitude for the families who trust us to be part of their homeownership journey.

Twenty years ago, ICHDE’s HomeOwnership Center (HOC) began with a belief that everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to call home. This anniversary celebration showed us how the HOC has grown into a true community of homeowners, advocates, and partners all working together to make the dream of homeownership a reality for Delaware families.

Here’s to the next 20 years of opening doors, building dreams, and strengthening our community, one home at a time!

Thank you to everyone who attended this special evening. Your presence, support, and partnership enable us to continue this essential work.
