Wilmington, DE, November 12, 2024 –On November 7th, 2024, Interfaith Community Housing of Delaware, Inc. (ICHDE), in collaboration with Prosperity Home Mortgage (PHM), the Hispanic American Association of Delaware, Inc. (HAAD), and the Delaware Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, hosted a second community event for Delaware’s Latino community. Held at the Hispanic American Association building in Wilmington, this workshop offered resources and tools that families need to begin their journey to homeownership.
This latest event builds on the success of our first-ever Spanish-language homeownership workshop, held on May 18, 2024. That inaugural event—also made possible with support from PHM—marked a significant milestone for ICHDE and drew nearly 120 participants. The success of that first event underscored the demand for homeownership education within Delaware’s Hispanic community and set the stage for this second collaboration.
With over 90 adults in attendance, the November 7th workshop was conducted entirely in Spanish. Rosa Rivera from ICHDE and Angie Alcalde of Prosperity Home Mortgage guided participants through topics including local, county, and state financial assistance programs for first-time homebuyers. The workshop highlighted the importance of housing counseling services from building and repairing credit to understanding the available grants and loan programs for down payment and closing cost assistance and the role of mortgage lenders. Attendees actively engaged with questions, seeking to understand how best to navigate their unique financial paths to homeownership.
The family-focused event also provided engaging financial literacy activities for children ages 4 to 15. Children, grouped by age, participated in hands-on activities exploring fundamental financial concepts such as currency, saving, budgeting, income, and expenses. The activities were met with enthusiasm, and many children shared how much they enjoyed learning about money in a way that was both fun and accessible.
In addition to sponsoring the event and providing a community dinner catered by a local restaurant, PHM generously donated over 50 backpacks filled with art supplies for families to take home.
The event also allowed ICHDE staff to set up one-on-one counseling sessions, offering personalized support for attendees ready to take the next step toward homeownership.
Through this latest event, ICHDE and Prosperity Home Mortgage have strengthened their shared commitment to empowering Delaware’s Latino community with essential knowledge and resources for achieving sustainable homeowners
