Spring Homeownership Opportunity Fair with Prosperity Home Mortgage

Catherine Davis

Interfaith Community Housing of Delaware (ICHDE) hosted a successful Spring Homeownership Opportunity Fair on April 26th from 10am to 2pm in partnership with Prosperity Home Mortgage (PHM) and Cathedral of Fresh Fire. The first-time homebuyers workshop attracted 59 adults and 15 children.

The event brought together key professionals from across the housing industry to provide comprehensive guidance to potential homeowners. ICHDE’s HUD-Certified Housing Counselor Arlisa Howard and the Homeownership Director Tracy Spriggs represented the ICHDE, while Mark Makowski Jr. from Prosperity Home Mortgage, realtor Nancy Good, and John and Tammy Kerrigan from Reliable Home Inspection Service provided valuable industry expertise. The Delaware State Housing Authority was represented by Housing Mortgage Analysts Dominique Blakey and Megan Farias.

A highlight of the fair was testimonials from individuals who had successfully navigated the homebuying process, offering real-world insights and inspiration to attendees. These personal stories helped illustrate the practical benefits of ICHDE’s homeownership programs and services and the mortgage programs available to first time homebuyers.

While adults were engaged in learning about the homebuying process, the children in attendance enjoyed fun financial literacy activities designed specifically for them, introducing important money concepts in an age-appropriate and engaging way.

The event showcased ICHDE’s commitment to serving low- to moderate-income households across Delaware, continuing our long-standing tradition of housing education since becoming Delaware’s first certified NeighborWorks HomeOwnership Center in 2005. Attendees received information about affordable housing options, mortgage programs specifically designed for first-time homebuyers, and the comprehensive housing counseling services available through ICHDE.

The Cathedral of Fresh Fire proved to be an excellent venue for community engagement, allowing for both informational presentations, lunch, separate children areas, and even areas for the popcorn and cotton candy machines! In addition to PHM’s beautifully-brand beach bags, participants left with resource packets containing valuable information about the homebuying process, available assistance programs, and next steps to begin their journey toward homeownership.

The strong attendance and positive engagement at this event demonstrate the continuing need for affordable housing resources and education in Delaware communities. These are difficult times both in terms of the economy and affordable housing shortage. The Spring Homeownership Fair was designed to meet participants wherever they are in the homebuying process. Our Homeownership Director likes to say: “Be ready, so you don’t have to get ready.” Taking steps now to build knowledge, improve credit, and understand the housing market means future homeowners can confidently seize their opportunity when the perfect moment arrives.

This event was made possible through generous funding from our partner, Prosperity Home Mortgage. For more information about our HomeOwnership Center service, please click here.
